Baking soda

May 7th, 2009 at 3:49 pm by Mark Allen under Mark Allen's Blog

Lots of people have suggested using baking soda. Many of the homeless and even viewers have said that baking soda serves many purposes.

I must admit that I have not been able to get clean. Baking sada can be used to brush your teeth, but it’s also used to clean up your hair. My hair is greasey and matted,  so I tried rubbing some baking soda through it.

I literally forgot my toothbrush. I was going to allow myself to bring one, but I forgot it. I’ve been trying to do my best with baking soda and my finger.

What has amzed me is how helpful the homeless have been. One man approached me and said he could help me. He offered to wash my socks for me. They don’t have much to offer, but they want to help.

Mark I just want to say how much I appreciate what u r doing. I have began to realize just how bad the homelessness in Terre Haute really is. I am thankful for the Light House Mission and everything that they do for the homeless! U have really opened a lot of people’s eyes. Including mine. I have for along time, felt that We all should do more in the United States about the homeless epidemic.
Don’t get me wrong, I know that all the countries we help need it. But I just think that we need to help our own homeless before we can help anyone else. I also would like to say thank you for this news story. People that work at news stations should have to do the same thing that u r doing right now. Maybe then, and only then, can they begin to understand what its like to be homeless.
I hope that u have a better night tonight than what u did ur first couple of nights. Stay safe and warm, and try to get plenty of food. Once again, I thank you for the hard work and dedication that u have put into this story and everything that u have done in the past and what u will continue to do in the future.

    Best of luck,

    Josh

I think what you are doing is kind of a slap in the face to people who are down on their luck.I dont believe you could understand how these people feel since you know that when you are done with your assignment you will get to go home take a shower fill your belly and go back to work where you get paid every week.I know some of the people you will talk to choose to live like they do but there are some people that dont want to live like this and they do have some pride I dont think Im the only person that feels this way I have only watched about sixty seconds of your report and it was enough for me If you want you can call me and I will tell you how I feel I know emailing is kind of a chicken way to tell people how you feel 812.208.2508 THANKS

I awakened in the night to the sound of pouring rain and thought of you. This has been quite a journey for you and all of us watching. I know you will be happy to be home and in your own bed soon. Thanks for the adventure, Mark. I know you have opened many eyes in the area.

Mark I have been keeping track of you since you sent the corn to the meeting and I really know what you are going through. So many of us are homeless and there is no help if you have ever been in trouble before. If you have been in trouble you cant get medical help food stamps or housing. Not to say you can get a job. I need to see a Dr. but I am homeless no medical. The goverment sets people up to fail. I can steal something to make money if I wanted to go to jail but since I choose not to I can get no help. I hope what you are doing makes a difference for all of us. Thank you!!!!

Mark I just want to let you know I think you are doing a great thing. It seem so unfair that you got someone who lives in a million house and other are liveing under a bridges. I know a girl who was homeless and was living under a bridge hear in Terre Haute one night her youngest son had an asthma attack and died he was only two. If you have a home to live in you are blessed. Again hats off to you Mark you are one of a kind to take on this job.

I appreciate that you are not pretending to be homeless, but doing the best you can to get close to the reality of homelessness and share the experience with us. I don’t find your story less meaningful because you know you can go home tonight, wash the street grime away in a hot tub and climb into a clean, soft bed. Those who truly live that life don’t have the means to tell us about it. Your journey has opened my eyes. Life without a home and job does not mean freedom from a landlord and boss. It means constant worry about how to meet your basic need for sleep, food, water, cleanliness. I hope the good folks who have shown such kindness and generosity to you will remember the truly needy person sitting on a bench in Gilbert Park.

I think this is truly amazing what you did for our town. People do not realize how many homeless people are in Terre Haute. Where I work I see homeless people everyday and it saddens me to know that they live in these circumstances. You are a brave person for doing this. We know you are truly not a homeless person and knowing this has a community we should all help out a little more!!!
