What is a jailbroken iPhone?February 12th, 2013 at 11:14 pm by Chris Essex under Gadget Talk, WTHI Blog
Recently I had a conversation with an old friend about jail breaking his iPhone. What is a jailbreak you may ask? It sounds bad you may also be thinking. The answer is it can be…but it mostly isn’t.
I’m going to start by saying, I’m a huge Apple nerd, but I’m not jail broken.
Apple has what many call a walled garden. That means everything you use on an iPhone goes through Apple. The apps in the App Store all have to be approved, no flash on your web browser. You can’t download outside games. Why in the heck is this a good thing you might be wondering? It sounds like they are trying to control the phone YOU own. And they are, but here’s why.
The allure of the iPhone for many is the smoothness and ease of use in the user interface. Most of the time your iPhone “just works” to steal a line from the late Steve Jobs. This protects your phone for the most part from viruses.
A jailbreak will change all of that. Some change for the good, some for the bad. It takes away many of the restrictions Apple has put in place. This opens your phone up to tons of new features and apps. It also is now opened to spyware and viruses as well.
Many people prefer the jailbreak route for the freedom it gives, on that same note if you are into that kind of experience, a good Android phone may be what you’re looking for.
I personally can’t recommend jail breaking your phone, mainly for the security reasons. Second though, it will void the warranty on your phone if it needs serviced.
